The focus ring is really smooth too, and it works great with the focus peaking in the X-T2 for manual focus, which I often find quicker than moving an autofocus point about when I’m up close in low light. It’s a sturdy metal build with one of those focus rings you pull back to unlock and use manually, revealing zone focus markings. ![]() But it’s best at medium-close quarters to get story-telling shots that take in your subject’s surroundings, to give a sense of what’s actually happening in that moment. If I had to I could just about shoot an entire wedding or event with this and the 56mm, although it’s a bit too tight for scenic wide shots, which is where the 16mm f/1.4 comes out, if not the 8-16mm. For my really impressive ultra-wides I’m carrying the 8-16mm f/2.8 these days, but as it’s pretty heavy I tend not to have it on during ‘action’ moments, so the 16mm was ready and waiting on my X-T3 to get the photo above.Īnd, it’s weather sealed too, which is great for events in the crappy British weather. It’s also great for wides in a pinch, especially if you can get a bit of distance. In the first shot above I’m about a foot behind the ladies, at most, and able to capture their joyful look at each other for real as well as in their mirrors, in what was a pretty dimly lit room from where I was standing. Providing roughly a 24mm-equivalent field of view It’s solidly built, great in low light, and an excellent documentary lens in small spaces. People rave about this lens with good reason. It’s now one of my favourites, and definitely one of the very best Fuji lenses for event photography. The Fujifilm XF 16mm f/1.4 quickly pushed the 14mm f/2.8 out of my bag.
